Global Surgery and Access to Surgical Care

Global surgery encompasses efforts to address disparities in access to surgical care and improve surgical services worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where surgical services are often limited or inaccessible. Access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care is essential for addressing the burden of surgical conditions, such as traumatic injuries, obstetric complications, and noncommunicable diseases. Initiatives in global surgery aim to strengthen surgical systems, build surgical workforce capacity, and expand access to essential surgical services through infrastructure development, training programs, and policy advocacy. By collaborating with local stakeholders, governments, and international organizations, global surgery initiatives strive to ensure that all individuals, regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status, have access to quality surgical care when needed, thereby improving health outcomes and promoting global health equity.
